winter doldrums

Filed under: life, play, rowing, cycling

For the past five years Winter has meant one horrible, painstakingly boring thing; Winter Workouts.

It was easy in college, if you didn’t do the workouts odds are you didn’t stand a chance at making the boat come Spring.  You had a coach and a team to let down if you didn’t make your way down to the field house for endless hours of steady-state.

Life afterwards is a whole other story. Now your by youself, theres no one there to yell at you, or give you the motivation to get up and get out there. And by out there, I mean in there, because its much to cold to venture outside. It’s up to you now, your motivator has to be the scale and the heart-rate monitor.

In an effort to curb the boredom I purchased a few books filled with various workouts.  It’s better than trying to figure them out on my own. Perhaps if I stick it out and push through the Winter hard enough, I can find a consistent group of people to ride with, just for a little extra motivation :).

Heres to a whole lot of catching up on movies and TV during those lovely indoor workouts.

gifts and upgrades and cycling fun

Got a little surprise today when I checked into my hotel. Apparently my Firm and the hotel chain I frequent are having a little appreciation week. I was lucky enough to book a stay at this particular brand on this particular week and benefit!

I ended up with a supremely large room, fruit basket, bottled water, a luggage thing and the opportunity to earn double points the rest of the year.  Not bad for doing something I was going to do already.

On another note, this past weekend was supremely awesome in its own right.  The bike race on Sunday was not to be believed. I’ve never seen that many people, that drunk standing next to that many cops cheering for that many cyclists. It was pretty awesome. Oh and running into kids you graduated high school with but haven’t seen in six years is fun too. Especially when you are out partying.

Watching the races also made me that much more excited to go see the Tour de France this summer.  I’ve come to realize there truly is nothing stopping anyone from taking their road bike and just hoping onto the course, jumping in with the pack (if you can keep up) and essentially joining the race. I swear I saw one guy do it this weekend.

Yesterday was totally worth waking up at 8am for.

junk mail

No. Not SPAM. I’m talking about the real life in your physical mailbox kind.

I seem to get an awful lot of it compared to my roommate, and it mostly focuses on credit card offers and car insurance quotes. For the month of June I propose a test. Instead of shredding into oblivion each little piece of marketing material that comes my way, I’m going to save it. And, at the end of the month, I’ll count it up and see where I stand.

I’m not sure what sort of conclusion this will yield, or if there is really any point to it… but its a Thursday night and I’m bored people.

rob & big

The Rob & Big Show has been brought to my attention as quite possibly one of the greatest shows on television. I base this solely on the fact that they purchased a mini-horse to keep in their downtown Hollywood home. Amazing.

See the episode here.

concert annoyances

Went down to Delaware this past Tuesday to see the rocket summer, boys like girls and hellogoodbye perform. During the performance I was reminded of one of the many things at concerts that really annoys me… before we get to that lets step aside to the following…

Have you ever been on YouTube looking for a music video for (insert favorite artist here)? If you notice, as you are looking for that video, there are 4,000 other videos created by fans of live performances by said artist. Most of these videos are just awful… voice dosn’t sync to sound, too far away, too dark… the list goes on.

Back to this past Tuesday… I have now met these people who put awful music videos up on YouTube. They were standing in front of me at the hellogoodbye concert. Instead of just enjoying the show and looking at the stage like everyone else, these girls were holding up their cammeras watching the show on their tiny 1.3 inch LCD screens. Trying “oh so hard” to get the perfect shot so they can place it up on YouTube. This boggled my mind… Why ruin a perfectly good show by spending your own hard earned money to stand there, very still, not making an extra sound or movement so you can record the show for others to watch in really really poor quality?

box seats

As I am trying to catch the train home from work last night I get the usual Friday night “What are you up to tonight?” call. After I rattle off some half baked ideas the caller asks, “do you want to go to the Phillies game? I just got some box seats from the Firm…” Woot… Yes!

So that was the evening. 7:05 Phillies v. Marlins game with all the hot dogs, chicken fingers and cheese steaks you could bear to stuff down your throat. Oh and beer, free beer. Your jealous.

Oddly enough the last baseball game I was ever in box seats for was the Mets v. Marlins… The Marlins lost both times… coincidence?
